10,000 Hours to Mastery

I've heard the term a lot over the time i've been studying trading. Through forums / chats / family members and online articles. I read this article this morning and whilst a lot of comparisons can be drawn with trading it got me thinking about how i'm getting on with achieving 10,000 hours screen time.

Whether or not this is the pinnacle and i'll be a fully accomplished trader by the time 10,000 comes around remains to be seen but I must admit i'm fascinated by the idea. So I sat down and roughly worked out where I might be.

  • 3 months in the summer of 2009 - June, July and August
4 weeks per month, 40 hours a week = 12 weeks x 40 hours = 480 hours

  • 3 months in the summer of 2010 - June, July and August
4 weeks per month, 40 hours a week = 12 weeks x 40 hours = 480 hours

  • 4 months paper trading in 2010 - September, October, November and December
4 weeks per month, 50 hours a week = 16 weeks x 50 hours = 800 hours

  • 12 months live in 2011
4 weeks per month, 50 hours a week = 48 weeks x 50 hours = 2400 hours

480 + 480 + 800 + 2400 = 4160

Plus two weeks at the start of this year = 4260 hours

So with some rough workings out i've come to a total of 4260 hours, some weeks i've spent many more hours and some i've spent less. I would think that this evens out pretty well over the course of the time i've spent studying.

4260 hours. Cool!

  1. It has to be 10,000 hours of constructive practice.
Pushing the boundaries and no 'free wheeling'.

Look for a book called 'Bounce' by M.Syed

I found it on the net and then went out and bought it. Confirmed a lot of my thoughts.
